Ruai residents in Nanyuki, Laikipia County have protested the overflow of raw sewage that is exposing them to dangers of hazardous diseases.

They accused landlords and the county government for not developing a permanent drainage solution in the area, noting they had raised complaints several times and they were yet to take action.

They said that landlords had been emptying their septic tanks and directing the filth on the ground to be washed away by rain.

Rajib Ibrahim, an Imam at Ruai mosque lamented over the strong odor emanating from the raw sewerage noting it had blocked the mosque’s entrance which had led them to live in poor conditions and disrupting their normal activities.

He called for immediate action to address the menace in the area. "When it rains, people pump out sewage and I can confirm that it has blocked the entrance of Ruai mosque. It is very filthy," said the Imam.

Fidel Wangai, another resident, said that they had been relying on exhauster services to empty their septic tanks since the area had no sewerage line.

He pointed accusing fingers to landlords that they wait for rain to start and pump out the waste water on the ground which overflows to their homesteads, exposing them to health risks.

"The waste water mixes with the floods when it rains and gets into homes. Children play with that dirty water and it is dangerous. Even livestock are affected," he decried.

Samuel Kiumbia, urged the county leadership to prioritize residents by building drainage systems aimed at improving their living conditions.

The residents further blamed the poor road network in the area that they were impassable during rainy days, which they called for immediate interventions

Efforts to reach out county public health official for comment were futile since he didn't respond to text messages and calls.
