Nyong'o, Oron condemn shooting of a student in Kisumu

Political leaders in Kisumu County have roundly condemned the shooting of a student in Kisumu on Tuesday.

The form two student at Rang'ala Girls High School in Ugunja, Siaya County was caught in between police and residents of Kisumu who were protesting the shooting of three people in the Lakeside City.

The residents comprised of matatu operators and juakali artisans.

Two people are hospitalised, nursing gun shot wounds.

Trouble started when traffic police officers spiked a matatu they were persuing at Juakali area.

It led to a confrontation with Juakali artisans and other residents, causing the incident.

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o condemned the incident, saying police ought to have used tear gas to disperse crowds.

"I wish to extend my condolence to the family of the girl who died during the chaos. The police ought to have used tear gas instead of live bullets during their confrontation with the matatu operators and Jua Kali artisans. Quick recovery to those injured in the fracas," said the County boss.

Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron met Kisumu security bosses.

He said they assured him that the officers involved in the shooting will face the law.

"The police bosses have told us that they have referred the case to IPOA who has taken the matter up with the DCI and will keep us posted."

Residents tried in vain to break into Central Police station to express their displeasure.
