Former Busia Governor, Sospeter Ojaamong, has expressed interest to return into active politics again after failing to secure a seat in Parliament, during the 2022 General Polls.
He has declared his interest for Busia Senatorial seat during the coming 2027 polls, a position currently being held by Okiya Omutata.
Addressing mourners during the burial service of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) lecturer, Dr Naomi Mogoria, at Amagoro Primary School in Teso North Sub-county, Governor Emeritus, noted that he had taken a break from politics until the next General Elections.
" I have just taken a leave in the political arena. Let me rest at home, but I will bounce back in 2027, God Willing," said Ojaamong.
The former Governor contested for the Member of Parliament (MP) position in the 2022 General Elections on an ODM ticket, where he lost to current MP, Mary Emase, of UDA.
" I still have a lot of energy to discharge duties in any capacity other than the Governorship, thus my belief that I may bounce back in the 2027 General Elections,” he added.
Ojaamong challenged the current leaders in Busia County, to fulfill the political agenda they gave to Busia residents and avoid divisive and petty politics.
"The current Administration is already one year in office. It should tell us their scorecard to date, " he said.
Governor Emeritus affirmed his support and commitment, to work with all elected leaders, to enable them to implement their development agenda.
Ojaamong sentiments come at a time when Busia residents have questioned the whereabouts of Busia Senator Omutata, for not being actively involved in the County oversight role.
“Omutata has become a stumbling block to the development of Busia County, he dedicates 90 percent of his time in court cases at the national level, yet Busia has so many burning issues that need intervention,” said Ejakait Maxwell, a resident of Amagoro.
His announcement comes a few weeks after National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, had an engagement with elders and Teso community leaders, to chat about the way forward for the community in national politics.
This comes even as the community leadership continues to call for the creation of Teso County, citing marginalization and inclusivity at the national cake sharing.
“Since independence, the Teso community has never held a cabinet secretary position or ambassadorial post. That is why we need to be felt in the government,” said Emase, while presenting on the By-partisan Talk Committee led by Ichungwa and Kalonzo.
