Olympics: Omanyala wins heat 2 to book semifinal slot
By Peter Ochieng
The fastest man in Africa Ferdinand Omanyala has qualified for the seminal of the 100m race, in the ongoing Paris Olympic Games, France.
As highly expected by Kenyans, Omanyala won heat 2 in a time of 10.08.
He will be in the 100m final on Sunday with hopes of reaching the final for the first time in his olympics journey.
Omanyala arrived at the Stade de France with the second fastest time in the world this season.
With the finish line in sight and qualification assured, he tactfully slowed down towards the line to preserve his energy for Sunday’s semi-final.
Kenyans took to social media to congratulate him, and wish him all the best in the semis. Here is a sample of their comments.
Rachael Maina: Congratulations but, if possible, he should work on his finishing power. 10:8 isn't very friendly. His qualified running mates are in 9:8, 9:9. I pray we get a medal this time.
Mchui Mleopard Duncan: He preserved his energy when he realised he was way ahead of the chasing park, otherwise he would have easily done a sub-10.00.
Kelvin Boaz: The commentator says he looks more of a boxer than a sprinter. He had a good start but relaxed towards finishing. Congratulations.
Brian Adviser: Omanyala has done Kenya and Africa proud, he now needs to storm into the finals even with a better sprinting time.
Mutharimi Geoffrey: Omanyala is good. He needs to work hard to compete with the American duo, Noah Lyles and Kerley.
Humphrey Wanjiku Njoroge: Heartfelt congratulations are in order for bringing such a heroic win at home and making Kenya shine globally. Just being optimistic for the finals. Kudos.
Ken Mc Rombo: Great run by Omanyala. Congratulations to the fastest man in the whole of Africa, the world and some parts of heaven!
During the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Omanyala finished 8th in of the semi final heats, missing out on the final. Hopefully, things will be better this time round.
Vivian Kiprotich finished second in the 800m Repechage behind German Majtie Kolberg, to advance to the semifinal. She joins world silver medalist Mary Moraa and rising star Lilina Odira, in the semis.
