By Peter Ochieng
Africa men 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala on Saturday retained his kingly status at the Kip Keino Classic, in Nairobi.
The Kenyan sprinter stormed to victory in time of 9.83 seconds, at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani in the presence of President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga, among others.
As was the case in 2022, Omanyala’s strong finish swept the Head of State off his feet as he left his seat to cheer him on.
Last year was it was Uhuru Kenya, today it was Ruto.
American Kenneth Bednareck came second in a time 9.98 seconds, ahead of his compatriot Marvin Bracy. He clocked 10.03 seconds.
Omanyala said it was so amazing to win at home.
“It feels so amazing to win at home in front of such a huge crowd,” he beamed.
“I am now focused on my next assignment, which is the Rabat Diamond League. I know it will not be easy but I will give it my all as I always do,” he added.
Before the race, he had expressed confidence of running under 10.65 but it was not to be.
He received his award from President Ruto.
In 2021, Omanyala finished second in the race.
