Uasin Gishu County has named a team of 24 set to take part in the coming Kenya Youth Inter-Counties Sports Association Games scheduled for April 23-30, in Tharaka Nithi County.
After a rigorous talent scouting exercise that ran alongside the Governor's Cup tournament at the ward levels, the under-23 team has been unveiled for the KYISA assignment in Tharaka Nithi. The trials were held on Tuesday.
The 12 men and 12 women will carry the hopes of the County that prides itself in the City of Champions tag, the volleyballers drawing inspiration from their athletics siblings who "run the world" quite literally.
County Executive for Youth and Sports, Eng Lucy Ng'endo, said Governor Jonathan Bii's government has the interests of the youth in terms of talent development at heart.
"The Governor is very focused on supporting sports talent, and therefore let us work hard as an appreciation to the Governor for rolling out such programs that seek to empower the youth," she said.
"And as you head to Tharaka, remember you represent the County, give your best ability and conduct yourself in a manner that represents the champions."
The executive also added, "Take full advantage of this opportunity that the county is giving unto you and work to grow your talent, get employment through it."
National women's head coach, Paul Bittok, who was part of the selection team, said: "This initiative is a path opener for the youth, maximize this opportunity because it is rare to get county sponsorship, to assist you in advancing your talent, so make it count."
Bittok said talent was displayed at the trials and shared his optimism that Uasin Gishu teams will yield great results at the eight-day games.
Chief Officer for Youth and Sports, Nahum Jelagat asked the youth to observe discipline as good morals, self-drive and listening to instructions are good recipes for excelling in sports. Kenya Volleyball Federation's North Rift chair, David Letting, had the same message to the youth.
Directors Henry Mukholwe (Sports and Talent Development), Peter Ruto (Youth Affairs) and Wilson Koros (sports deputy director) were among the senior county officials who were at the trials.
