OVC recruitment drive exceeds target

The Orphans and Vulnerable children (OVC) scale up exercise under the Inua Jamii programme has surpassed target in Rachuonyo South Sub County even as government extended the recruitment period.

The exercise that began on September 1st has seen 1,724 OVC households reached so far in according to the area Children Officer Brian Saidi.

The officer said initially, 1,092 households were targeted from the 12 locations of the sub county.

“Equally we have recruited 490 people living with severe disability against target of 90 in the sub county,” he said.

The Inua Jamii programme scale up scheduled to end on September 30, 2023 target households with OVC, older persons and people living with severely disabilities.  

For a household to join the OVC programme, the officer said it must have orphans, must be extremely poor and has one or two vulnerable children or is a household with chronically ill caregiver and lastly, the household must not be benefitting from any cash transfer Programme. 

For the older person, the person must be 70 years and above and must not be under any pension scheme. 

“And for a person with severe disability to qualify for recruitment he or she must not be in any cash transfer programme,” the officer said.

Saidi said after the registration exercise is over, the next phase will be to verify and validate the document for households that would have qualified for the programme to start receiving their monthly cash transfer of Sh. 2,000.

The officer said a total of 4,022 households comprising the OVC, older persons and those with severe disabilities have so far been registered.
