Kisumu: All set for tourism week

By Peter Ochieng

The county government of Kisumu is all set for the inaugural Kisumu Tourism Week, geared towards conserving the environment and positioning the Lakeside devolved unit as the go-to tourism destination.

The event is being organised through the Directorate of Tourism under its marketing campaign initiative, dubbed Kisumu My Pride.

Addressing members of the press on Wednesday, Mathews Ochieng Owili, Kisumu county Deputy Governor said the idea is not just to promote tourism, but to invest in a future where "our planet thrives, our community prospers and our people flourish."

"As we embark on this incredible journey, we emphasize the importance of promoting sustainable tourism development, preserving our natural environment and enhancing the beauty of our beloved city," said the DG.

The Tourism week starts on Saturday, 23rd September 2023 and runs through to Wednesday, 27th September, 2023, with various activities lined up.

"Throughout the week, we have an array of events and activities planned for you," added Owili.

The activities include tree planting under the city greening initiative, Kisumu City Run, Clean-up activities, conferences, exhibitions and entertainment.

"Kisumu tourism week 2023 embodies our dedication to the principles of sustainable tourism. We extend our gratitude to all our partners, sponsors, participants and community members for their support," added the DG.

"Together we can invest in our planet, our prosperity and our people, creating a bright future for the great county of Kisumu and the world."

The event has brought on board the Kenya Industrial Research Institute, Athletics Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Service, National Museums of Kenya and the Kenya Airports Authority among others, as partners.
