A team from the Sustainable Housing Initiative (SHI) on a fact-finding mission in Nakuru County to study affordable Housing projects.
The study findings will orient and significantly influence Kenya's affordable housing policies and provide key insights for sector investment.
The delegation paid a courtesy call to the office of the Chief Officer for Housing and Urban Development Kamau Kuria who took the consortium through Governor Susan Kihika's Housing agenda for the over 2.3 million residents of the county.
"Governor Susan Kihika has a cordial relationship with the National Government to provide at least 30,000 units under the Affordable Housing in Nakuru. With the recognition of the Prior Learning Programme, we will absorb 3000 into the different housing schemes in the first phase," said Kamau.
Kuria noted that the residents have a positive affirmation for the affordable houses since the first project at Bondeni estate has almost sold out all the 600 apartments, and many things including security and infrastructure have changed the entire area.
He added that even the land prices have tripled and tenants neighboring the affordable houses are paying more rent due to good pleasantness, and amenities such as water and solar street lights.
The chief officer observed that unlike other counties Nakuru has a lot of government land, which makes it much easier to construct as many as possible affordable houses in all the towns from Naivasha, Gilgil, Njoro, and Molo.
Present were Daphneē Govers a consultant at Espelia, Kilion Nyambuga program officer at Slum Dwellers International, Sammy Njoroge of Muungano Cooperative, and Director Housing Benard Maruhi.
