A PEFA Church Bishop has denied media's claims that ‘Bishop’ Samson Obonyo, who was recently arrested in Kisii over alleged swindling, is affiliated with the PEFA Church and told the suspect to carry his own cross.

The self-proclaimed bishop, Obonyo, is accused of conning people approximately Sh1.5 million while promising to facilitate their acquisition of USA visas and related documents.

However, during a press briefing at PEFA Kisii Cathedral, Bishop Simon Mosoti, who represents the church West Nyanza region, clarified that Obonyo is actually his excommunicated former deputy bishop.

Mosoti said the suspect who was nabbed by police in Kisii had previously faced allegations of swindling church funds.

Mosoti said the regional secretary of the church replaced Obonyo after he (Obonyo) was dismissed last year in accordance with PEFA procedures and constitution.

Bishop Mosoti stressed that any legal actions taken should focus on the individual himself, rather than associating him with the PEFA Church calling upon the law enforcement agencies to handle the case appropriately.

The 60-year-old suspect was apprehended based on reports that he had allegedly defrauded approximately 20 youths a total of Sh1.5 million.

The suspect has since been released on a Sh 3 million bond or Sh600,000 cash bail pending the hearing and determination of his case.
