Police have nabbed a vehicle that was disguised as a church van transporting 750L of Chang’aa at Kipsigak location in Nandi County.
According to the Nandi Central Deputy County Commissioner Obed Mose, the vehicle that had religious texts written all over it sped off when the police checkpoint at Kipsigak tried to stop it prompting a hot pursuit of the vehicle.
According to the police officers who were at the scene, they were forced to shoot the tires of the speeding vehicle in order to immobilise it and two suspects fled on foot following the shooting.
The chang’aa was packed in 300 polythene bags each with a capacity of 2.5L stuffed in ten 90 kg sacks.
The Deputy County Commissioner lauded the police officers for the capture of the vehicle stating that their vigilance came in handy.
Despite the failure of the police to arrest the perpetrator, the Deputy County Commissioner stated that the National Intelligence Service team was working on identifying the individual as two phones suspected to be owned by the fugitive were in custody.
“We are yet to know where the fugitive was coming from and where he was ferrying the Chang’aa to but our DCI officers are making a follow-up,” said Mr Mose.
He further thanked the members of the public stating that many of the tips received by the police that lead to arrests come from members of the public.
Speaking to the press after the operation, Nandi County Deputy Police Commander Bosita Omukholongolo stated that the fight against illegal brew in the county was headed in the right direction.
“I can’t say that we have won the fight against illegal brew but we are very sure that soon, the cases will be very minimal,” said the Deputy County Police Commander.
Even as the police intensify the fight against the illegal brew, the fight against other illegal drugs has been intensified as well in the County.
According to Mr Mose, one sack of bhang was recently captured by police and that signified that there was no room for drug peddling in Nandi County.
