Police in Embu West Sub- County have arrested a middle-aged man for planting bhang in his compound in Gakwegori area on the outskirts of Embu Town.
During the Saturday afternoon raid, the detectives uprooted over 100 stems of the herb and also confiscated seeds as well as several rolls of the banned narcotics from his house.
The suspect identified as James Gitonga however said he only planted the stimulant for his personal use as a detox following prescription from his doctor.
“I haven’t planted it for sale but for my own use to detox my body, I boil it while still green and then drink it,” he explained, pointing out that if it was for commercial purposes, he would have cultivated more.
He pleaded with the police not to arrest him saying the herb was not for illegal trade since he was using it for medicinal purposes, adding that his health had improved since he started using it.
Confirming the incident, Assistant County Commissioner Charles Opiyo, said they raided the homestead after a tipoff from members of the public.
He warned others who may be engaging in unlawful activities that their days were numbered and soon the law will catch up with them.
Opiyo encouraged the public to continue sharing information with security agencies with regard to all forms of illegal activities taking place around them.
The suspect was booked at Itabua Police Station awaiting processing and arraignment in court.
