Police in Moyale Sub County in Marsabit county have netted bhang with a sh. 10 million street value as the fight against drug trafficking heightened in the county.

The 443-kilogram haul packaged in 99 bales was seized when a truck was intercepted by police at Kate along the Moyale-Marsabit-Isiolo highway at around 3 am, Thursday night.

Moyale Sub County Police Commander George Kipkoros said that police who were acting on a tip off were met with fire from suspected pillions and an exchange of fire ensued in which the truck driver was injured.

The driver of the truck, a Mercedes Benz registration number KCT 227N with a trailer registration number ZC 2166 Z who got injured on the lower abdomen was taken to Moyale Sub County hospital in a critical condition. 

He is expected to undergo a surgical operation.

Preliminary investigations into the incident point at a neighbouring country as the origin of the suspected narcotics while the police are yet to establish where it was destined to.

Mr Kipkoros said 14 spent cartridges of different caliber were recovered at the scene in addition to one live round of ammunition.

The Sub County police chief added that efforts to trace the owner of the vehicle were underway.

 It is believed that the lorry driver was short by suspected owners of the contraband cargo but who the police have launched a manhunt.

Marsabit County Commissioner Nobert Komora early this week reiterated the government resolve to eradicate the drug trafficking and abuse menace.

He called on law enforcement agents to strengthen surveillance and also enlist the support of the members of the public in order to win the fight against the vice.
