Former Nairobi deputy governor Polycarp Igathe has officially announced that he will be contesting the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the August 2022 general election. Speaking during an interview with KTN news on Tuesday night, Igathe noted that he has embarked on the campaign trail and will be traversing every corner of the county popularising his bid. Igathe is contesting the gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee party ticket under the Azimio la Umoja coalition. He says he has the interest of Nairobi at heart, arguing that being in the business world, he is best suited to head Nairobi County. Regarding his previous tenure as deputy governor, Igathe said he resigned because he failed to earn the trust of his boss. He says he is now going for the top seat so that he does not have to wait for orders from someone else, or resign if not handed duties. “I am not going to step down anymore, I’m coming and telling you I can be Governor of Nairobi. Assess me, review me I’m on the ballot for your review. For the next twelve weeks I’m going to campaign. I’m really committed to this job. I stepped down from a big private sector job in the past and I’m repeating the same. I’m coming and putting my name on the line and Saying I want to be Governor of Nairobi,” he said. He defended his bid noting that Nairobi is a business hub and deserves a business guru to head it. “I’m not a candidate for President Uhuru Kenyatta. I have been in the streets I work everyday with Small and micro-enterprises in Nairobi…My heart constituency, my tribe is business, Nairobi is the city of business. We all come here to do business, that is my constituency, I’ not be propelled by Uhuru Kenyatta.,” he said in part. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Igathe could be unveiled on Thursday April 21, 2022 as the Azimio la Umoja candidate for Nairobi Governor with Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi deputising him. According to reports on Nation, the alleged lineup was agreed upon at a meeting held in State House, Nairobi.
