Preparations for EL-Nino Rains underway in Nakuru

The Nakuru County Government has started taking precautionary measures in preparation for the El Nino rainfall, which is anticipated to commence next month up to December. 

Consequently, the Acting County Secretary, Dr. Samuel Mwaura Friday held a meeting with various County Departments and National Government Agencies KURA, KERRA and KENHA, during which some key areas that require immediate attention were discussed. 

 Mwaura said the team will work together to create a comprehensive multi-agency report, which will later be presented to the Governor for implementation.   

The KFA roundabout and a section of the highway below the railway crossing bridge were identified as places prone to flooding. Also, they visited the Gioto dumpsite, London, Milimani, and some of the drainage projects that are underway. 

Dr. Mwaura said other areas that will be included in the action plan include Naivasha, Gilgil, Kuresoi, Njoro, Bahati, and Molo where previous heavy rains caused havoc. 

The hilly terrain of Nakuru County has in the past caused a lot of damage to properties, and even swept away people in the lower parts of the town, such as Kwa Rhonda and Kaptembwo. 

The Gioto dumpsite situated on a hilltop has in the past been blamed by the management of the Nakuru National Park at the bottom of the hill for the garbage that ends in the area. 

The 2017 heavy rainfall was attributed to the flooding of major lakes in the Rift Valley, including Lakes Nakuru, and Baringo, which are still almost full due to heavy siltation from the hills.
