Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended the prime Suspect in relation to a fraudulent recruitment scheme targeting Kenyans seeking jobs abroad.

Brian Reeves Obare is implicated in a scheme that siphoned millions of shillings from the pockets of unsuspecting Kenyans through fake Jobs in Canada.

In a statement, DCI on Friday, October 18, said Obare's arrest took place in Ongata Rongai town, "a culmination of efforts sparked by a formal complaint lodged by one of his victims on August 19, 2024." DCI said.

The detectives revealed the investigation gained momentum following a further detailed report captured in another letter dated October 8, 2024.

According to the detectives, the suspect colluded with accomplices to lure victims with false promises of employment opportunities in Canada, assuring them of assistance with necessary documentation.Only to leave the victims in despair and frustration.

Obare has been placed under custody undergoing the final stages of processing as he prepares for his arraignment in court where he will be charged with conspiracy to defraud and obtaining money by false pretenses.

"This case stands as a stark reminder of the vital importance of vigilance within our neighborhoods where such individuals lurk in the darkness waiting to pounce." DCI stated.

The DCI further urged Kenyans to remain cautious of offers that seem too good to be true as such schemes often lead to heartbreaking consequences.

How to check legit agencies

Cases of Kenyans seeking jobs abroad being scammed by agencies and agents have been on the rise as many Kenyans continue to try their lack overseas.

To avoid being conned while seeking jobs abroad, note that the Kenyan government through the National Employment Authority keeps a record of licensed foreign and local recruitment agencies.

The list can be accessed through the National Employment Authority Integrated Management System (NEAIMS) which is currently connecting 25,400 job seekers with 8,074 employers.

Interested Kenyans can connect with the recruiters by clicking www.neaims.go.ke and then selecting the “List of Private Employment Agencies” tab on the homepage.

According to the State Department for Diaspora Affairs says, Kenyans seeking to leave the country should first confirm whether the agent is licensed and registered with the National Employment Authority via the NEAIMS website.
