Leaders allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga under the Azimio la Umoja coalition have threatened to impeach National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for his decision to join the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Speaking in Nyeri on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, Narok Senator Ledama Olekina, Murang'a County Woman Representative Sabina Chege, and Kieni Member of Parliament Kanini Kega called for Muturi to resign as speaker, arguing that the decision to team up with Deputy President William Ruto's camp will affect how he conducts business in parliament.
The leaders asked the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) leader to resign and allow for the election of a new speaker. The lawmakers threatened to impeach Muturi should he fail to step down.
“Muturi ought to resign and allow a non-partisan leader to succeed him. He is the Speaker of the National Assembly and not one for Jubilee Party. By choosing sides, he has already created the perception that he will lean towards one side,” Kega stated.

Chege on her part, stated that the lawmakers should let Speaker Muturi decide his own fate, however, noted that the honourable thing to do is step down.
“He should do an honourable thing and resign. But if he wants to continue earning a double salary, then we leave it to God.
“I don’t think there is a need for unnecessary drama in Parliament where we know we have few days to the General Election,” Chege cautioned her colleagues against creating a crisis at the National Assembly.
She called out Muturi for ditching President Kenyatta, terming him ungrateful to the person who made him the third most powerful leader in the country.
“He failed while contesting for a parliamentary seat. We know where he came from, yet he has seen that the best gift he can give Uhuru is joining the other side,” Chege lamented.
Senator Ledama on his part claimed that the speaker tendered his resignation the day he decided to join the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
This comes days after Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka reportedly joined the DP Ruto-led coalition. However, the Senate Speaker missed a meeting that unveiled him as the coalition's Bungoma County gubernatorial aspirant.
Lusaka is yet to officially declare his political stand.
However, Gatundu South MP, Moses Kuria, an ally of Ruto, claimed that both speakers had deserted Uhuru and Raila to support the DP.
“Dear Mr President, the Deputy President, the Speakers of the Senate and National Assembly, 60 per cent of MPs in Senate and the National Assembly, more than 70 per cent of MCAs countrywide and yours truly (Kuria) as your village mate and long term friend are in Kenya Kwanza.
“How long will you resist?” Kuria posted on his social media pages.
Ruto allies, nevertheless, castigated the government for allegedly using state agencies to coerce them against supporting the DP.
“Mimi sitishiwi, na kama kuna mtu anafikiri anaweza nipange, ajue kwamba siwezi pangwa,” Speaker Muturi had stated.
