Korrompoi residents in Isinya Sub County have undertaken a clean-up exercise to rid their environment of solid waste.
The youths from the area, traders, school-going children and other members of the public came together to collect garbage, drain sewerages and burn the waste.
During the exercise, the residents were reminded of the importance of keeping the environment clean as it prevents a lot of diseases such as cholera which is deadly if untreated in 24 hours’ time.
"We've seen it important to take part in the exercise as it helps keep the environment safe for both livestock and human beings. It is the right of every individual to live in a clean and healthy environment and each one of us has a responsibility to ensure that our environment is always clean," said Emmanuel Tupet, Korrompoi Residents Association Chairman.
He revealed that the community will be carrying out similar exercises occasionally as a means of keeping their environment clean.
David Mwaura, one of the residents urged the National Environment Management Authority to conduct a crackdown in the shopping centres as they are still using the banned plastic bags which pose a threat to the environment.
Mwaura also urged the plot owners to maintain hygiene in the plots as landlords are required to have their own dumping sites to ensure waste and garbage are not thrown all over.
The Association leaders also took the opportunity to urge the youths to refrain from alcohol and drug abuse adding that they have no benefit but only ruin one's future.
