A man identified as Daudi Leyian Loempu who masquerades as a police officer was apprehended by locals in Mashuuru shopping centre, Kajiado East constituency, with two sheep suspected to have been stolen from two farmers in Entepesi sub location.

The mob descended on him with kicks and blows before he was rescued by security officers who responded to the distress cries of the suspect.

Upon interrogation by locals, the miscreant confessed to the mob that he was colluding with police officers to rob the locals their source of livelihood.

The residents said the suspect has always been seen in the area in the company of security officers thus leading the locals to assume he is one of them.

“This man identifies himself as an investigative police officer. I have known him since the year 2020. I’m shocked to know that he is the one who has been stealing our livestock from us," lamented Mrs Linnet Kimakon, a resident of Mashuuru location.

Mr Paul Masari, whose sheep was stolen said he does not trust the police officers anymore as the suspect has been seen hanging around with the police.

“We depend on police officers to provide security to us but it is unfortunate that they are collaborating with thugs to take what is ours,’’ said Mr Masari.

Mashuuru Officer Commanding Police Division, Charles Chepkonga refuted claims that the suspect is indeed a police officer saying that he is not one of his officers at the station.

Chepkonga distanced himself from the suspect and added that his officers are not thieves and their mandate is to protect the lives and properties of the civilians as enshrined in the constitution.

He revealed that the suspect is in police custody and is to be arraigned in court.

Mr Paul Uka, the area Senior Chief, said that there had been rising cases of livestock theft in the area, especially at night and called upon the residents to always report someone suspected to be a thief to the relevant authorities.

The incident happened barely two days after 50 dorper sheep belonging to Bishop Chris Kosencha were stolen in Isinya Sub County on Tuesday night.
