Residents of Elgeyo Marakwet advised to prepare for short rains

Elgeyo Marakwet County Director of meteorology Simon Cheptot has revealed that the county will get slightly above normal rains in the coming short rains season which runs from October to December.

Addressing the media in Iten, the director however said while the country is expected to experience the elnino phenomenon, the rains which are expected to start by the end of October will not be as heavy in the county as the rest of the country.

Cheptot said the rains are expected to continue past the normal short rains season which ends in December and extend into January next year.

He therefore called on farmers to take advantage of the rains and liaise with the department of agriculture to get advice on the short season quick maturing crops that they can plant to ensure food security in the county.

He further appealed to farmers to harvest their matured crops and dry them before the onset of the rains to prevent post-harvest losses.

The director called on the department of Interior and the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) to advice residents on the possible occurrence of disasters especially in areas that are prone to landslides.
