Residents urged to comply with Environmental Rules and regulations

Homa Bay Water and Environment Chief Officer Donald Ogweno has asked traders operating shops and other businesses selling food products that require wrapping to avail dustbins for storing litter. 

Ogweno said that the bins should be placed at every door of business premises so that buyers can dispose of litter in them, especially plastics as a way of protecting the environment.

He made the remarks after waste collectors employed by the county government in major towns and markets raised complaints of irresponsible disposal of wastes which gives them a hard time while collecting the same.

"The least you can do is to put litter in a container instead of throwing it on the ground to make it easy for the collectors who will only offload them in their truck before moving to the next point," he said.

He said that most plastic wastes are disposed improperly thus ending up in the lake, a situation which he noted endangered fish as well as their consumers. 

The Chief Officer who spoke yesterday in Homa Bay town argued that due to pollution from plastics and other environmental degradation, Lake Victoria has turned into a septic tank.

"Most of these wastes come from homes and businesses. These wastes are disposed of to the environment where they are further washed off to the lake especially when it rains," he noted.

He urged residents to comply with environmental rules and regulations by disposing wastes responsibly adding proper disposal makes waste management easier.

Brighton Maringa, the director Green Villages organisation noted that the level of water pollution at the lake is alarming and urged county governments that border the water body to find solutions that will restore it to its former state.
