By Robert Mutasi
The head coach of Tusker FC, which participates in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, Robert Matano has left after his contract was expired.
The 60-year-old coach joined Tusker FC in 2018 while winning two FKF premier league titles as well as winning the best coach of the month of June 2021 and the best coach of the 2020/21 season.
Matano has been one of the most professional trainers in the country having coached some clubs such as Afc Leopards in 2017, Ulinzi Stars 2024-2016 World Hope FC 2005-2007. Matano won the fkf title with Sofapaka in 2009.
As many know him as 'Lion', he is known for his 'tactics' while remaining a coach who has won more FKF titles than any coach from this country.
Some clubs will now be looking for his services, especially at this time that he does not have a club.
For the six years he has been in Tusker FC, Matano has never finished outside the top four teams in the FKF league.
Robert Stanley Matano was former Harambee stars player, who played as defender.
He started his coaching career journey in 1986 at Pumwani Sportif where his star started shining.
He is regarded as a respected figure in Kenyan football due to his strategic mindset and leadership.
His time at Sofapaka, where he guided the team to an incredible league victory in 2009 in their inaugural season, was especially turbulent, giving rise to the nickname "Lion."
"The name originated when I was leaving Sofapaka under challenging circumstances. There was significant backbiting within the team, and I told them I am a Lion, not a Hyena," Matano revealed in an interview with Buzz Sports.
The courage, focus, dedication, and resolve that set him apart from his competitors are portrayed by his nickname.
"Any coach who succeeds me and wins all the trophies I secured with the team might be considered better than me, especially if he wins the CAF Champions League or the Club World Cup. I always hunt and achieve whatever I set my mind to," he added.
