By Peter Ochieng
President William Ruto on Tuesday got a standing ovation, after addressing the European Union (EU) Parliament in Strasbourg, France.
His slightly over half an hour speech was centered around tackling climate change crisis and vouching for massive investment opportunities in Africa.
"The world must take bold and strategic action to tackle the climate crisis. We must act decisively to implement the structural shifts required to achieve the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius," the Head of State said in his captivating speech.
"This is the time for Africa, Europe, and all regions of the world to work together to drive sharp cuts in greenhouse gas emissions for our combined survival."
"One of the biggest contributions the EU can make to both addressing poverty in Africa and achieving global climate goals is through its demand for green products and services, including for carbon credits. Africa wants to compete," he added.
Ruto in the once in a lifetime address to the EU Parliament said Africa needs the right investments in order to become a green industrial powerhouse.
"Africa's journey to become a green industrial powerhouse needs the right type and amount of capital, especially in renewable energy and infrastructure. Such investment could catapult Africa to a future where energy access is universal by 2030, simultaneously slashing emissions from energy generated by some 80 per cent."
He said by investing in education, Africa has all it takes to provide a better future for its youth.
"By investing in the education and skill development of our young population, Africa can create a vibrant, self-sustaining economy that offers its youth compelling reasons to build their futures at home. I extend a warm invitation to European companies, institutions, and organisations to explore the many opportunities our continent has to offer."
Ruto concluded his address by urging world leaders to be remembered as the ones who invested in the future.
"Let it be said of us that we were visionaries, not just preoccupied with the present, but deeply invested in the future. Let our legacy be one of foresight, collaboration, and solidarity. I thank you."
It was at this point that he received a standing ovation from the whole Parliamant, as he was directed back to his seat.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, Leader of Majority in the Senate Aaron Cheruiyot and Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung'wah, were among those in the House.
