Over one hundred students have been funded by the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to pursue various courses at Mawego Technical Training Institute (TTI)
The students drawn from Karachuonyo constituency have been awarded Sh10,000 each to enable them undertake technical courses at the institution.
Karachuonyo Member of Parliament Adipo Okuome said that technical courses will reduce unemployment amongst the Kenyan youths.
He noted that the government pays capitation fees for students in public technical training institutions as a way of reducing the cost of education for learners.
The students may also access funds from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
Okuome said they are empowering the students to enable them acquire skills and participate in nation building.
“The students will acquire technical know-how which will enable them to be self-employed and create jobs for others. In this way, we will reduce poverty in many families,” Okuome said.
Speaking when he saw the students off to Mawego TTI at Alaw Rachuonyo social hall in Kendu Bay earlier this week, the MP urged the students to work hard in academics and ensure they build successful careers.
He said they signed an agreement with the college that they will be directly paying examination fees for the students.
The Sh10, 000 will cater for fees and partly for examination.
“We’re encouraging our youths to work hard because white collar jobs are scarce. Let’s join TTIs because we’re sure of getting and creating jobs for ourselves,” he added.
Present were Mawego TTI Deputy Principal in charge of academics Leah Otieno, Rachuonyo North Deputy County Commissioner Aaron Koross and the constituency funds account Manager Danson Galgalo Guyo.
Otieno urged the students to maintain high levels of discipline to ensure they complete the academic courses.
“Students should concentrate on academics and ensure they come out with good certificates. As tutors, we’ll help you where necessary for you to fulfill your dreams,” Otieno said.
Koross said the sponsorship the students have received is a privilege and they should take advantage of it to work hard and succeed.
“Take up this opportunity and utilize it well to improve your future living standards,” Koross said.
Guyo asked Mawego TTI not to send students home should there be delay in remitting funds saying they are committed to the cause.
“We’ll strive to pay money on time to avoid inconveniences to the learners,” Guyo said.
