Supreme Court judges set for six-week recess

Supreme Court judges are expected to proceed on a recess in the coming weeks.

According to Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Karambu Koome, the recess cum holiday will last for a period of six weeks.

The CJ in a gazette notice said the reccess will commence on 1st August, 2023 and go on until mid September.

“Pursuant to Article 163 (1) (a) of the Constitution of Kenya and section 6 of the Supreme Court Act, 2011 and Rules 4, 5 and 7 of the Supreme Court Rules 2020; the Chief Justice gives notice that the Supreme Court August recess will commence on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, and terminate on Saturday, September 16, 2023, both days inclusive,” reads the gazette notice dated 16th June, 2023.

Services will not be available during that period, with only the duty judge present to deal with urgent matters.

Similarly, the Supreme Court registry in Nairobi Will remain open.

“During this period, the Supreme Court registry shall be open to the public from 8.30 am to 5 pm on all weekdays other than public holidays,” Koome said.

Supreme Court comprises of 7 judges, including the CJ and the Deputy.

The Court is usually on the lips of Kenyans, during presidential petitions as was the case in 2013, 2017 and 2022.
