Traditional Herbal Medicine Gaining a Foothold in the Health System

Traditional herbal medicine is witnessing a remarkable resurgence, with an increasing number of people embracing its use for treatment of various diseases.
The residents of Vihiga County and the neighbouring areas have been turning to the expertise of traditional herbalist Mr Abdallah Juma, from Luanda township in sub county, for treatment of various ailments and disorders.
Known for his vast knowledge of traditional healing practices using medicinal extracts from local plants, Juma receives and attends to scores of patients daily.
The herbalist said that despite the fact that modern medicine has an upper hand in the healthcare systems, a considerable number of people still prefer herbs because of affordability and low incidents of side effects.
"The extracts I use are locally available as there is abundant medicinal flora in the region, from the vibrant orange hues of Marata (Calotropis procera) to the lush green foliage of Moray (Ocimum gratissimum), to enable my patients meet their health concerns,” he asserted.
Calotropis treats digestive disorders, toothache, cramps and joint pains while Ocimum gratissimum cures diabetes, cancer, inflammation, anemia, diarrhea, pains as well as fungal and bacterial infections.
Juma who inherited the practice from his father said he selects and prepares the herbs targeting specific conditions such as malaria, stomach ailments, respiratory disorders and skin diseases.
The herbalist said that nature has always provided an immense pharmacy of healing plants, adding that he incorporates spiritual elements into his practice, considering the mind, body and spirit as interconnected entities.
The self-proclaimed healer encouraged the masses to respect and preserve their cultural heritage while valuing the advancements made in modern medicine. “I am urging the public to embrace the healing potential of traditional medicine while upholding the potency of modern medicine and health systems,” he stated.
He called for the collaboration between traditional herbalists and modern medicine practitioners so as to realise comprehensive healthcare solutions.
