The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leaders from the North Rift region have thrown weight behind the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja unity pact saying it will help cool down the rising political temperatures in the country.
Speaking at Adurokoit during an inspection tour of development projects, the leaders led by Kapenguria Member of Parliament (MP) Mr. Samuel Moroto said they welcome the talks for the sake of the country’s development.
“Peace is paramount for any society’s development. We also want Raila Odinga to be respected and the president has accepted to have the office of the leader of opposition,” said Moroto.
The MP highlighted that Raila spearheaded the creation of the 2010 constitution, hence he should be accorded a hero’s treatment.
“Raila should be respected as a statesman. He should not be misused in fights. The President helped Raila when they were in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and they are friends and they know each other,” stated Moroto.
Kapenguria Member of County assembly (MCA) Richard Mastaluk said they would not accept a handshake, but they look forward to a vibrant opposition.
“We need everybody whether in opposition or in government. It is good to make noise, but a handshake will take Kenya behind and the gains we have gotten from the Finance Bill,” said Mastaluk, taking a swipe at leaders from the county who had started collecting signatures to oust President William Ruto from power.
He admonished those in support of the anti-government demonstrations regretting that there was an MP from the region who went to light candles for those who were fighting with security officers, yet there was gross insecurity in his constituency.
Mnagei MCA Mr. Richard Todosia said they support the talks that bring unity.
“We support anything that brings peace in Kenya and it is within the law not the mongrel system we saw between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Those are the things we don’t want. Any attempt to bring us together is welcome,” said Todosia.
Riwo MCA Mr. David Alekulem said Kenyans wanted peace and structured talks within the law. “We want Kenyans to engage in business. We want unity that will benefit all Kenyans,” stated the MCA.
West Pokot County UDA Coordinator Rajab Chombus lauded President Ruto for accepting the unity talks saying Kenyans were yearning for peace.
“Let the handshake not be to benefit Raila alone. Let him not enter the Government,” noted Chombus.
This comes when Kenya Kwanza and Azimio One Kenya Alliance preparing to engage in talks following protests that led to killings and destruction of poverty that sparked international concerns, amid calls for dialogue.
