University of Nairobi (UoN) remains the best institution of higher learning in the Country.

However, the institution has dropped in the Centre for World University Ranking (CWUR) top 2. 000 list for the year 2023.

UoN is ranked 1, 425th this year, which signifies a drop of 20 places a year ago.

In 2022, University of Nairobi was ranked at position 1, 405.

20, 531 Universities were ranked, with America and European institutions occupying a lion's share of the top 2, 000.

Only 7 African Universities, among them University of Nairobi made the top 2, 000 bracket.

According to CWUR, UoN dropped 20 places due to various factors, among them decline in employability of it's graduates.

“Efforts must be made to ensure that Kenya attracts top academics and students, that the increase in university enrolments is matched by an increase in teaching capacity, and that expenditure on tertiary education as a percentage of national GDP increases steadily in the coming years," CWUR said in a statement.

The report says that UoN graduates employability dipped from 1, 553 last year to 1, 610 this year.

Despite the drop in ranking, UoN Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama maintains that standards are among the best.

“Obviously we’re delighted. Students at UoN are taught from new knowledge based on research. We have a huge responsibility to maintain the standards we’ve set. The others Universities know where to go,” he said as quoted by Daily Nation.

Harvard is the world’s top university with a perfect score of 100 percent, for the 12th year running.
