Netherlands Head Coach Louis Van Gaal has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Dutch men's soccer national team boss made the revelation on Sunday, April 3, 2022, however, maintained that he plans to be in charge of the team during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year. Speaking to RTL television, Van Gaal, 70, stated that his players were not aware of his condition prior to the announcement. He, however, noted that there is nothing to worry about revealing he has already undergone 25 bouts of radiotherapy. "I've been through so much in my life, sickness and death, I've probably become richer as a person because of all those experiences," he said. Last week, it was announced that Van Gaal had tested positive for Covid. In 2021, he broke his hip when he fell off his bike. He was reappointed Netherlands Head Coach in August 2021 following the termination of Frank De Boer. Also served as the Dutch team manager between 2001 - 2002 and 2012 - 2014. During his second stint, the Oranje lost via penalties to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. However, they won bronze by thrashing the host nation 3-0 in the third-place playoff. The former Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Barcelona head coach slammed the decision to host the World Cup in Qatar arguing that FIFA settled on the Asian country for monetary reasons only.

The Netherlands were placed in Group A with hosts Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal in Friday's draw for the 2022 World Cup in Doha.
