Vihiga County Referral Hospital (VCRH) has started offering free screening and rectification services for Fistula.

Fistula is a disorder that occurs when a tunnel develops along the drainage tract to allow waste to pass through the opening instead of the anus.

Dr. Maureen Okango, gynecologist at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital (VCRH), explains that the abnormal condition is attributable to such factors as prolonged labour or obstructed childbirth, pelvic surgery, infection or pelvic injury.

Dr. Okango stated that the tunnel may occur between the cervix and vagina, or the colon and surface of the body, thereby enabling the human wastes to pass through it, a situation that is so embarrassing to the victims.

The medic, who is in charge of the Fistula clinic, said they have partnered with the Fistula Foundation to provide the services to the residents.

“On average, we attend to five cases per month and we are encouraging those affected to visit the hospital for assistance,” she said.

The health officer said fistula is preventable and urged the expectant mothers to deliver under the care of skilled personnel who are able to tackle any complications that may arise.
