The National Council of Churches in Kenya (NCCK) Meru branch has urged other churches to take politicians donotions’ saying the church will pray for sanctification of the contributions.
Compared with last year, the church seems to take a U-turn from what the NCCK Upper Eastern region committee had advised. The Eastern region caucus told churches to avoid at any cost donations from politicians as a way to avoid abuse of places of worship during campaigns.
“This regional committee urges all faith leaders in our counties to avoid asking for donations from politicians or aspirants. When you ask for donations, they tend to take advantage of using the sanctuaries and worship meetings to engage in political vitriol and divisive campaigns,” Bishop Jadiel Kaigongi of the Upper Eastern region stated last year.

Politicians are known to prefer churches with larger congregations which provide them with a better platform to spread their news and urge people to consider them during the elections.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, NCCK Meru County church leaders said politicians are part of their congregations and therefore should be treated the same.
“We cannot deny politicians the opportunity to spread their words. Church leaders may not know the source of their money brought to their churches but God will determine what’s good and bad," Bishop Justin Bundi of NCCK Meru said.
“However, politicians must be careful not to incite or cause division in the country and also in churches. They must conduct their campaigns smoothly. We call upon all Kenyans, media houses, politicians, government and actors to embrace different ways to coexist together during the general election,” Bishop Bundi concluded.
NCCK also took the chance to urge every citizen to consider their lives after elections and advised everyone to ensure they conduct themselves in ways that brings peace and harmony.
