Governor Wangamati's message after four die from illicit brew

By Peter Ochieng Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati has sent condolence message to the families of four people who died after consuming illicit liquor in Kamkuywa, Kilimili Sub County. The governor said he is saddened by the incident, indicating that up to 11 people were admitted after partaking the poisonous alcohol.

"I am deeply saddened by the news of the unfortunate deaths of 4 people from Kimakwa village, Kamukuywa ward, Kimilili Sub County after partaking illicit liquor. 11 more were rushed to hospital with 1 still admitted but in stable condition. The rest have since been discharged," he said in a statement seen by this writer. "My prayers are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones even as we believe God for healing of those still in hospital," he added. The four who succumbed; three ladies and one man took the drink on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 and later started complaining of stomach pains. The four, including the brew seller were rushed to hospital, but unfortunately succumbed. The governor urged the national government to fast track creation of laws to govern the local brew business. "My prayer is that the national government will fast track on the creation of laws and policies that will govern the local brew enterprise to ensure that both the traders and partakers are protected." Police in Bungoma occasionally carryout sting operations to flush out illicit brew traders, but the challenge is yet to be effectively tackled.
