A woman who burned her nine-year-old son with a hot panga as punishment for begging food from their neighbour has been charged with assault in a Loitoktok court.
The accused, Margaret Wambui pleaded guilty to assaulting David Kilonzo, aged 9-years old, inflicting burns on his neck on October 30, last month at Ilasit village.
According to the prosecution, on the material day Wambui had left her three children at home and when she came back at around 10pm she learned that her first born son had borrowed food from their neighbor.
She got furious and put a panga on a hot jiko and inflicted burns around the neck of the complainant.
Neighbours who heard the cries of the children at night noticed that the complainant was in pain and alerted area chief who with police officers from Ilasit Police Station arrested the accused while the boy was escorted to a local dispensary for medical treatment.
Loitoktok Sub County Children’s Officer, Denis Njoroge, told the court that the victim and his other siblings are in safe custody at a local children's home.
The accused pleaded guilty and in mitigation asked for leniency from the court saying she has gone through harsh times which have caused her to be emotionally unstable.
The court set the matter for mention on November 7 awaiting a pre-sentencing report.
