A robbery suspect escaped death after a group of angry youths who were baying for his blood stormed Homa Bay Police Station to deliver justice.
The more than 20 boda boda riders had budged into the police station Wednesday demanding that the suspect be handed over to them so that they could decide his fate.
They claimed that he was involved in a number of thefts within the sub county and so were adamant about having their way despite a number of warnings by police officers.
This led to a series of confrontations between police officers and the boda boda men with the former trying to evict them from the compound.
Speaking to KNA, Homa Bay County Police Commander Samson Kinne said they were forced to lob teargas to disperse the youths, adding they left behind about 20 motorcycles while fleeing the station.
“Some of them left behind their motor cycles which we have seized,” he said.
He said that they had received a distress phone call from the suspect who hails from Olodo village within Homa Bay town Sub County alleging that he was being attacked by a group of youths at his homestead.
The youths had set his house on fire and were hell-bent on finishing him off when the police arrived at his home. “The youths had set fire to his house and by good luck our officers reached there on time to put it out and save the victim who was also injured,” he noted.
The suspects who ran away on their motor cycles upon seeing the police, claimed that the victim had a gun in his possession and that he had shot a bullet once in the air.
“However, the victim also claimed that the youths had a gun with them. It was a homemade gun capable of shooting a bullet which the boda boda men took it to Rodi Police post,” he added.
"Police officers who searched the victim's house later, found nothing suspicious," added Kinne.
He stated that they are conducting an investigation to ascertain all these allegations and at the same time sent a stern warning against anyone with the intention of budging into the police station in future to create chaos.
“If the man is a culprit then the court will decide but storming the police station was an act of impunity and they must answer for their action,” he said.
