By Joshua Cheloti Twelve political parties have formally signed an agreement to form the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. Secretary Generals of the twelve parties signed the agreement in an event held at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi. Deputy President William Ruto, who is the coalition’s presumed presidential flagbearer, in a tweet, said the agreement was a commitment to more than 50 million Kenyans. “At Ngong’ Racecourse in Nairobi County, appended our signatures to Kenya Kwanza coalition to affirm our commitment to the more than 50 million Kenyans,” he tweeted. Political parties that have joined Kenya Kwanza Coalition include DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Amani National Congress (ANC) of Musalia Mudavadi, and Ford Kenya, led by Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula. After signing, the parties will now deposit the agreement to the Registrar of Political Parties. “This is the alliance of the willing, the alliance of the free. It’s abt the people&changing the economy. That’s the difference with our competitors; their coalitions are of the intimidated, blackmailed &coerced &about leaders sharing power,” said Hussein Mohammed, the Director William Samoei Ruto Presidential Campaign Secretariat in a tweet, before the parties signed the agreement. "Kenya Kwanza is an Alliance for and by the people. We are a well oiled machine that believes in trust, transparency and ending political conmanship in our country," Mudavadi stated. "We want to affirm and re-affirm that the hopes of over 50 million Kenyans lie with Kenya Kwanza. Kenya Kwanza wants to change the lives of all Kenyans by focusing on service delivery and economic revival. "We commit to ensure that we put Kenyans ahead of everything. Our collective responsibility is to ensure every Kenyan can afford food on the table and live with dignity," he added. The deal now sets the pace for officially naming the coalition’s flag bearer and its running mate. While DP Ruto is an almost assured flag bearer, the headache is still on who the running mate will be with Mount Kenya politicians and those in Western Kenya jostling for it. A section of politicians in Mount have in the past said the slot belongs to them, even as some from Western Kenya have fronted ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi as an ideal deputy for the DP in Kenya Kwanza.
