9 bodies retrieved from Mukuru dumpsite

Residents of Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi are engulfed in both fear and shock, after nine bodies were retrieved from a dumpsite.

The bodies, which police say were both fresh and decomposed, were discovered wrapped in polythene bags. Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei linked the deaths to murder, adding that the motive is still not known.

Residents expressed their fear, indicating that more bodies could be retrieved from the expansive dumpsite. “A woman came and told me that she dreamt of the whereabouts of her missing sister and wanted us to go and retrieve her body. We doubted her at first and as we approached the scene, spotted a wrapped polythene bag,” one of the eyewitnesses said.

“Upon examining the area, we found several bodies wrapped in the polythene bags with some being cut into pieces and tied with ropes. If they lived nearby, we would have heard of the reports which means that these bodies were transferred to this location. We want the government to investigate this matter.”

Elsewhere, a 49-year-old man and his 12-year-old son reportedly died under mysterious circumstances while fishing on their family land in Rogoi village, Kirinyaga County, on Thursday.

Samuel Kariuki's body and that of his son, a Grade 5 pupil, were found entangled in a fishing net. They were supposedly using the net to harvest fish from a swamp on their land. Kariuki's wife Anastacia Nduku raised the alarm and failed to find her husband and the son.

"I had to call my other family member to help me trace them but they were nowhere to be seen. We found them dead in a fishing net at the swamp in the morning. We don't know what happened," Nduku said.

The bodies were moved to Kerugoya Hospital Mortuary, as the family appeals for investigations to unravel the circumstances behind the duo’s deaths.
