By Peter Ochieng
Are you a graduate of the National Youth Service (NYS), and you’re willing to work in the United Kingdom (UK)?
NYS through an advert shared on its online platforms on Wednesday said opportunities exist in the UK, particularly to graduates with agriculture qualifications, through a scheme dubbed “The Seasonal Worker (SWS).
“It provides farmers and growers in the UK with a source of labour to meet their workforce demand for seasonal positions within the horticulture sector,” the advert states.
“The scheme was introduced to NYS by the Kenya High Commissioner to the UK. A recruitment firm named HOPs labour solutions is an authorized operator in the UK and has been introduced to National Youth Service to carry out the recruitment of seasonal workers from the pool of National Youth Service graduates with Agriculture qualification on 7th December 2023.”
Successful recruits will reside and work in the fruit and vegetable sector for a period of six (6) months, tentatively from February 2024.
According to NYS, the pilot phase of a similar exercise was done in June 2023, and 45 graduates are currently working in the UK.
Applicants with the following minimum requirements are needed; a National Youth Service graduate with agriculture related courses, willing to reside and work in the UK for six months and return at the end of the contract.
Applicants must also be able to finance a passport processing fee of approximately Sh6,550, a return ticket of Sh192,500, a visa application fee of Sh45,325 and sustainability amount of Sh30,000 to support living costs until first pay is received.
Those willing to apply must be highly motivated and interested in practical farming, medically and physically fit, available to turn up for briefing and interviews at NYS Yatta Field Unit on 7th December 2023.
