Over shillings 200 million has been set aside for bursaries to sponsor the education of bright but needy students in Kakamega County.
Area Governor Fernandes Barasa said each ward will get four million shillings up from two million in the last fiscal year.
“The County will give out shillings four million in every ward out of the 60 wards in the region,” said the Governor.
The Governor who was speaking in Mumias Sub County said a total of shillings 240 million will be provided to cater to the ever-increasing numbers of students.
Barasa also said that students from secondary, tertiary institutions and universities will be awarded the funds after vigorous vetting next year in January.
He said the successful applicants will be given a minimum of shillings 5000 to pay for their fees in various institutions.
“We will form committees to oversee this exercise so that the most deserving students are given priority at the grassroots level,” he said.
The County Boss said he is committed to facilitating the education sector through scholarships and bursaries at the ward levels.
He added that the County Government has allocated more than shillings 40 million in scholarships to support students in local and international institutions.
Governor Barasa said in collaboration with ACCESS KENYA, they have distributed about Sh10.4 million worth of scholarships to commendable learners who had scored C+ and above.
“We have doubled bursary allocation to four million in every ward. I encourage students to apply for the funds,” said the Governor.
He said the county government will liaise with the National Government through the Constituency Development Fund to ensure parents are cushioned against the harsh economic times.
