About 376000 residents from Embu County have borrowed Sh. 750 Million from the Hustler Fund, County Commissioner Jack Obuo has said.

He said 78 percent of the borrowers were repaying the microloans regularly and urged more residents to take advantage of the fund.

He said another opportunity for business loans existed with the Kenya Industrial Estates where group members could access loans of between Sh. 200000 and Sh.20 million.

The Commissioner was speaking at the Siakago Stadium in Mbeere North when he presided over this year's Jamhuri Day Celebrations.

The Commissioner cautioned residents that there's a proliferation of counterfeit liquor and urged them to drink only brews they are sure of during the coming festive season.

He also urged them to ensure they eat only meat that has been certified as safe.

Mr Obuo said they had received drugs, foodstuff, and utensils to assist those affected by the El Nino Rains.

Embu Deputy Governor Kinyua Mugo said they are working with the national government to eradicate wanton drinking and added that the County Government will close all bars in villages.

"If you want to run a bar business just look for premises in the larger towns", Mugo said.

Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku said he has started a bursary program in his constituency where all-day school secondary school students will pay only a maximum of Sh.1500 as school fees.

Embu Woman Representative Njoki Njeru said her Restore Hope program will start assisting former schoolgirls who fell pregnant and dropped out of school to resume their education in local day schools in the new year.
