Activist Boniface Mwangi has been ordered to pay a fine of Sh300, 000 by a Machakos High Court for contempt of court or in default spend two months in prison.
Machakos High Court Judge Justice Francis Rayola found Mwangi guilty of the charges after he disobeyed court orders compelling him to apologise and retract defamatory statements he made on his Twitter account in which he accused Tourism Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alfred Mutua of bombing his house in Lukenya, Machakos County in October 2021.
The CS sued the activist for defamation when he was serving as the governor for Machakos County.
The court also barred Mwangi from posting any information related to the defamation case whose hearing has been slated for January 17, 2024.
Mwangi through his lawyer Martha Karua said he will appeal the verdict.
Speaking to the press outside the law courts Karua termed the sentencing as a miscarriage of justice.
“CS Mutua is a fugitive of justice. He came to hide in the courts yet he is the main suspect in the bombing of Mwangi's house,” she said.
Karua also faulted the police for failing to investigate the bombing of the house.
