About 40 MCAs from Meru County Assembly have denied allegations by a section of their colleagues that there were plans to introduce a motion in the house to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Led by majority leader who is also Mitunguu MCA Evans Mawira, the legislators told journalists that they were not aware of such plans and those who were fronting the ideology had their own political interests.

On Tuesday, a section of the MCAs led by Deputy Speaker Ali Mwenda and Minority leader Mwenda Ithili threatened to introduce an impeachment motion against the Governor on various allegations including side-lining some areas in terms of development, disrespecting her Deputy and also called on President William Ruto to form a Metropolitan service to run the County.

“When we were resolving our issues after the first attempt to impeach the Governor, we agreed that we would be sitting down to deliberate in case there were any issues between the executive and the legislature and that is the reason we had held our meeting today.

“We are categorically saying that there is not even a dream from the assembly that we will be tabling an impeachment motion,” said Mr Mawira.

On allegations that the Governor was side-lining some areas in the County, Mawira said that the 45 wards will each be getting an equal allocation of Shs. 15million in terms of ward fund and therefore the issue of sidelining cannot hold water.

On the issue of subdividing the County, Mawira said they will support the constitutional way of doing it but not issues spearheaded by those who are opposing the Governor and who are trying to whip people’s emotions on the matter.

"The constitution is very clear that to add more counties in the country, there must be a referendum and those supporting this should start the initiative from the National Assembly and the senate so that we can amend the constitution,” said Mr Mawira.

On the issue of differences between Governor Kawira Mwangaza and her Deputy Isaac Mutuma, The MCAs said that the assembly will not in any way interfere with the relationship between the two who are on the side of the executive.

“We have no way of constituting the executive arm of the government apart from vetting those who are presented to us by the Governor. We have no information on their relationship,” Mr Mawira asserted.

He said they will play their oversight role the best way possible but this will not mean that they will not represent their people accordingly as the two roles are very distinct.

“By supporting the Governor, it doesn’t mean that we cease to do our work in terms of representation of our people and even the oversight role as it’s supposed to be.

They called on all the elected leaders from the county including those at the national level to unite in all aspects in order to benefit from the national government.

Minority Whip Jim Muchui said the County should now settle and steer away from daily politics for the sake of development.

“Our focus at the moment is how we will hold hands to bring development to our people. We don’t want any further fighting. We are also vouching for a united Meru,” said Mr Muchui.

He said it was only through such unity that they could succeed in lobbying for more resources from the national government as opposed to when there is infighting among the leaders.

He said the County is one and they were advocating for equal development in all corners of the county.

“If there is any possibility of having subdivision of the County, we will support it when that time comes since we will have more resources,” said Mr Muchui.
