Atheist president calls for adoption of one child policy
By Peter Ochieng
Harrison Mumia, the self proclaimed president of atheists in Kenya says time is ripe for Kenya to control its population.
According to Mumia, president William Ruto's administration should adopt the one child policy, in a bid to control Kenya's population growth. Mumia, in a letter said controlling population will boost the government's war against unemployment.
"We urge President Ruto's government to implement a one-child policy to control the population in Kenya. A one child policy will provide many advantages for future generations, both socially and economically," he said.
"A decrease in the Kenyan population will lead to less competition among citizens for jobs and unemployment will be alleviated," he argued.
He claimed that Kenya's high population, which stands at 55 million is the reason for many hardships being experienced in the country.
"Too many births in Kenya is one reason why we are experiencing economic hardships and cultural backwardness. The population should be controlled to combat poverty in Kenya."
The one child policy was famously implemented in China since the 1970s before it was abolished in 2016, after the government realised that the population was aging with no young generations coming up.
Mumia's stand goes against the views of most politicians, who especially during campaigns, urge Kenyans to give birth 'to as many children as possible.'
He claims that a high percentage of Kenya's population is that of people born outside wedlock.
