Atletico Madrid ends Real's unbeaten La Liga record
By Peter Ochieng
Atletico Madrid are the Kings of Madrid, at least for now.
Diego Pablo Someone's side beat City rivals Real Madrid 3-1 in a Spanish La Liga match played at Atletico's Wanda Metropolitano home turf, on Sunday night.
Alvaro Morata, former Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea foward scored twice, as Anthony Griezmann scored another on the road to maximum points.
Toni Kroos scored a consolation goal for Real.
Atletico's win ended Real's unbeaten record this season.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti conceded defeat, and said he is to blame for the loss.
"The formation didn't change, started with a diamond. But we didn't start well, we didn't defend well. And when they went 2-0 up, they played the game they wanted to. Atleti did it better than us in this regard."
"It's something we've talked about and will continue to talk about. Many times, they take the lead early, and only in some cases do we come back. Today, we were close, but the 3-1 seals the game; it was too much to come back from," he added.
Two goals hero Morata was on cloud nine after the game.
"I'm very happy for the fans. I said it the other day, the fans were going to have the most important role. And that's how it's been. It's been an incredible atmosphere. We've all been in it together, we've given our all on the field, and they have done the same in the stands.
"What I need is to feel important. This year I feel more important than in other years, and I hope we can keep winning. I want to win a title with Atleti. As the coach said, we just want kids to go to school feeling proud of wearing an Atleti jersey."
With the defeat, Real Madrid surrendered La Liga's top spot to perennial rivals Barcelona.
Xaxi Hernández's charges are top with 16 points from 6 matches.
Surprise package Girona occupy the second position with similar points, but with an inferior goal difference.
Real Madrid are in third place with 15 points, five ahead of fifth placed Atletico Madrid.
Up next for Real Madrid is a La Liga match against Las Palmas on Wednesday at home, while Atletico will be on the road away to Osasuna.
