It was a moment of depair as Kenyan-born Winfred Yavi snatched gold from world record holder and 2019 champ Beatrice Chepkoech to win the 3000m women's Steeplechase in Budapest tonight .
Yavi passed the defending champion and pre-race favorite Chepkoech with less than 500m to go, forcing the Kenyan to settle for silver. Chepkoech's compatriot Faith Cherotich who is also the youngest athlete to climb the podium in worlds, took bronze.
It was a sweet win for Yavi, who has finished fourth in back-to-back world championships. She was born in Kenya but chose to represent Bahrain since 2016 at 15 years of age.
Yavi posted the fifth fastest time in the history of the event, using 8:54.29 to win her first major gold medal. Chepkoech followed with 8:58.98, while former under 20 champion Cherotich posted her personal best of 9:00.69.
Kenyan has finished the champions on a fair high with four gold medals, three silver and four bronze making a total of 11 medals.
