Member of Parliament for Dagoretti North Constituency Beatrice Elachi has expressed concerns about the new university funding models being implemented by the Ministry of Education under President William Ruto's administration.

In an interview with K24 Television on Monday, August 26, 2024, Elachi said that while she supports the president's vision, she has concerns about the way the new funding models are being implemented.

While Elachi pointed out that President Ruto has admirable ideas, especially when it comes to changing the education sector, there appears to be a big gap between his vision and how it is actually being implemented.

"The President has very good ideas, but his implementers have no idea what they are doing," she remarked, reflecting a growing sentiment among stakeholders who feel that the transition to the new funding models has been less than smooth.

The Ministry of Education has made increasing access to higher education a priority, and one of its main goals with the new university funding models is to make it more inclusive and affordable.

The models are aimed at providing targeted financial assistance to students based on need, ensuring that those from disadvantaged backgrounds have a better chance of pursuing tertiary education.

However, according to Elachi, the implementation has faced numerous challenges, including poor communication and a lack of preparedness by the institutions tasked with executing the plans.

Elachi's comments come at a time when there is widespread debate about the effectiveness of the new funding models.

Critics have pointed out that the rollout has been marred by confusion among students and parents, delays in disbursement of funds, and inconsistencies in how different universities are applying the new rules.

These issues have led to frustrations among beneficiaries, many of whom feel left in the dark about how the new system works.

President Ruto has insisted that the adjustments are required to address the disparities in access to higher education. He has supported the new funding models as part of his larger agenda to reform the education sector.

He has made it clear that the new models will level the playing field for students all around the nation by guaranteeing that financial aid is provided to those who need it the most.

Despite these assurances, Elachi’s criticism underscores the challenges that lie ahead for the Ministry of Education as it seeks to fully implement the new funding models.

Her remarks have added to the pressure on the government to address the teething problems associated with the rollout and ensure that the president’s vision for a more equitable education system is realized.

As the debate continues, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the government responds to these challenges and whether it can deliver on its promise of a more inclusive higher education system for all Kenyans.
