Motorcycle riders, popularly known as bodaboda riders, took to the streets Tuesday in Ogembo, Kisii demanding action against local police officers whom they accuse of continuous harassment.
The riders gathered in large numbers, voicing their concerns and vowing to continue their demonstrations until the rogue officers are transferred from the area.
According to eyewitnesses, a confrontation occurred between the officers and one of the bodaboda riders while they were unwinding at a local bar. The incident resulted in the rider sustaining injuries inflicted by one of the officers.
Speaking to the crowd, Fred Nunda, Kisii bodaboda association chairperson, expressed the frustrations of the bodaboda community, highlighting the continuous harassment they have faced at the hands of the police.
He claimed that officers often targeted them even in their designated rest areas, such as the alcohol bars where they sought respite after a long day's work.
"These officers have made our lives unbearable," Nunda exclaimed. "They harass us at every turn, demanding bribes, and using unnecessary force. We are hardworking citizens who provide a vital service to the community, and we deserve to be treated with dignity and respect."
The bodaboda riders present at the demonstration shared similar stories, recounting incidents of verbal abuse, unwarranted arrests, and even physical assault at the hands of the police.
Many claimed that the officers would frequently set up illegal checkpoints along their regular routes, using them as an opportunity to extort money from the riders.
In response to the riders' demands, the area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Emmanuel Mwachiro, promised a thorough investigation into the allegations.
He assured them that appropriate action would be taken against any officers found guilty of misconduct.
"We understand the significance of the bodaboda sector in our community, and we value your contributions," said Mwachiro. "The police force is here to protect and serve, and any officer found to be in breach of their duties will face the consequences."
Despite the assurance from the DCC, the bodaboda riders remained skeptical and vowed to continue their demonstrations until the rogue officers were transferred out of the area.
They called for swift action to be taken and urged the local administration to prioritise their safety and well-being.
The demonstration caused a temporary disruption in the town, with traffic being diverted to alternate routes.
However, no major incidents were reported, and the protesters maintained a peaceful stance throughout the incident.
