By Joshua Cheloti The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has received a major boost in the battle for the control of Nairobi County votes. This is after the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura formally joined the party headed by Deputy President William Ruto. DP Ruto announced the arrival of Mutura in his camp in a post on his official Twitter handle. In the tweet, Ruto who is considered among the front runners for the presidency said Mutura has joined UDA with several other leaders from the populous county. “The leaders of Nairobi County led by Speaker Benson Mutura have officially declared that the Hustler Nation is their home and that Kenya Kwanza is the way to a better country. Uchumi Kwanza,” DP Ruto tweeted, alongside photos of him with Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichungwa welcoming the leaders. In the 2017 general election, the Jubilee party had a majority of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), with ODM having to settle for the minority. Before shifting allegiance, Benson Mutura was a member of the Jubilee party. He had taken over from former Speaker Beatrice Elachi, who remains a vocal defender of Azimio la Umoja. Both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja are battling for the Nairobi votes, with UDA getting a boost after gubernatorial aspirant Johnstone Sakaja revealed that he was a member of the party. It was thought Sakaja was in the ANC party. “I have never joined ANC. When I left Jubilee, I went straight to UDA,” Sakaja told the Star. Sakaja will now be facing Bishop Margaret Wanjiru for the Nairobi UDA ticket in the upcoming nominations set for April 14, 2022. Azimio la Umoja is still faced with the challenge of presenting a single gubernatorial candidate with ODM, Jubilee, and Wiper having candidates eyeing the seat. Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi is the sole ODM candidate eyeing the seat with businessman Richard Ngatia, current governor Ann Kananu and Agnes Kagure seeking to fly the Jubilee ticket.
