Bungoma leaders unite ahead of Ruto's visit

Leaders drawn from various spheres came together on Saturday, in a show of unity ahead of president William Ruto’s two-day visit.

The Head of State will be in Bungoma on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th 2023, in his first development-oriented tour since being elected Kenya’s fifth president a year ago.

Addressing a press conference led by Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka at Uwanja Ndege, Kanduyi, on Saturday morning, the leaders called for unity of purpose during the president’s visit.

They sharply condemned their Azimio counterparts, for reportedly criticizing the president’s visit.

The governor said the 2022 presidential contest was won and lost in Bungoma.

"Kenyans voted overwhelmingly for president Ruto. Elections were won and lost in Bungoma. We equally have a share of the national cake,” he said.

His stand comes from the fact that William Ruto garnered most votes in Bungoma, compared to his main rival in the presidential race, Azimio’s Raila Odinga.

Ruto got 229, 409 votes, against Odinga’s 13, 478.

Lusaka urged leaders to embrace the Head of State's visit, noting that it will impact significantly on the economy of the county.

Ruto will launch and initiate several development projects during his time in the county.

"Campaigns are long behind us. It is time to unite and steer our economy. Our people deserve better. Let us focus on improving their lives.”

"We are fully prepared and ready for this occasion. I humbly call on our people to unite and welcome the president with open arms,” added the governor.

His sentiments were echoed by Members of Parliament (MPS) John Waluke of Sirisia, John Makali (Kanduyi), Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), John Chikati (Tongaren) and Martin Wanyonyi (Webuye East).

Members of the Bungoma County Assembly, clergy and senior county officials attended the press briefing as a sign of solidarity.
