Makueni County is in the process of creating a tree data bank to ensure all trees planted are nurtured and sustained in a bid to fight climate change.

Speaking in Wote on Monday, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for the Department of Lands and Environment Dr. Sonia Nzilani challenged all Non-governmental (NGOs), faith-based organizations and government institutions to provide data on all tree seedlings they planted this season.

Consequently, Nzilani said this will bring on board all stakeholders dealing with environmental matters to work as a team instead of working solo to enhance accountability for what has been done hence avoid repetition.

Further, the CECM who was addressing the County Environment Committee (CECM) Members reiterated that it was a collective responsibility to ensure that trees are grown to maturity.

“We don’t want every department and organization to work solo, instead we need to work as a team. Each institution should say what they are doing and ensure there is accountability for what we do,” Nzilani said during a workshop on forest and landscape restoration funded by the United Kingdom (UKPact) through the Centre for International Forestry Research (ICRAF).

During the workshop, she urged each organization to ensure they avail data on the number of tree seedlings planted and areas that have benefited so that the county has a proper record of what is happening in combating climate change effects.
