By Peter Ochieng
Tottenham Hotspur's 2023/2024 premier league season unbeaten run came to an end on Tuesday night at the hands of local rivals, Chelsea.
The Blues, managed by former Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino ran out 4-1 winners.
Chelsea striker Nicholas Jackson was the hero as he scored a hatrick in a drama-filled game at Tottenham stadium.
The home side was reduced to 10 men in the first half, and then 9 players in the second courtesy of red cards.
The sides scored a dozen of goals, but up to five were disallowed by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions.
Spurs deservedly went ahead when Dejan Kulusevski's sixth minute shot deflected in off Chelsea defender Levi Colwill.
Son Heung-min then had an effort narrowly ruled out for offside as the home side looked to capitalise on their early dominance.
Chelsea felt unlucky when they had two goals of their own disallowed.
Raheem Sterling and Moises Caicedo's goals were ruled out for handball and offside respectively.
Defender Christian Romero was then handed a red card for a dangerous challenge on Enzo Fernandes, before Cole Palmer scored via a penalty spot to settle matters at 1-1 going into the halftime break.
Destiny Udogie was sent off ten minutes after the break for a reckless tackle on Sterling, earning him a second yellow card from referee Michael Oliver.
With 15 minutes remaining, Raheem Sterling broke clear to set up Nicolas Jackson for a simple finish.
Eric Dier's superb finish got ruled out for a narrow offside, beforeJackson scored two more in stoppage time to secure a hat-trick and a major win for Chelsea.
Arsenal and Spurs were the only unbeaten sides going into the past weekend.
Arsenal lost the unbeaten record on Saturday, coming from a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United.
Manchester City are top of the league standings with 27 points after 11 matches, a point ahead of second placed Spurs.
Liverpool and Arsenal close the top four slots with 24 points each, but the Reds do enjoy a superior goal difference over the Gunners.
